Which season suits which region?
Italy and France combine two worlds: alpine heights and Mediterranean coasts – with opposite best seasons. As a rough rule: spring and autumn by the sea, summer in the mountains.
APR – JUN
Spring
The best time for coastal paths such as the Amalfi Coast or the Calanques: mild, green and still quiet. In the Dolomites and around Mont Blanc there is still snow at higher altitudes.
JUL – SEP
Summer
High season for the Dolomites, the Mont Blanc region and the Pyrenees – huts and lifts in operation. On the coast it gets very hot; some trails (e.g. the Calanques) are closed when there is a wildfire risk.
SEP – OCT
Autumn
The second coastal window: warm sea, clear air, fewer people. In the mountains often stable, quiet days – until the first snow at higher altitudes.
NOV – MAR
Winter
Mediterranean regions stay mild and easy to walk – ideal for coastal and gorge trails in the south. Alpine routes are snow-covered and reserved for the summer season.
